The Benefits of Street Sweeping
Cleaning streets and
parking lots is about more than just appearances. Accumulated oil, grime, and other
debris can become hazards. Street sweeping is an effective means of removing
the soil and debris to improve safety. Removing a variety of litter decreases the
chance of skids and collisions, and also enables drivers to safely judge the distance
to curbs and roadway edges. Construction and debris in the road cause pedestrians,
runners, and cyclists to swerve into the roadway to avoid large items, mud, or
skid conditions. This swerving action may cause accidents and serious injuries.
Another essential benefit
of street sweeping is the removal of metal particles and other hazardous waste
products discarded by passing vehicles. Certain particles can be extremely
harmful to fish and other wildlife if they get into creeks, rivers, beaches, or
bays. Some hazardous particles may bond to other larger debris that releases unhealthy
emissions into the air. Also, rubbish in roadway gutters and at construction
sites quickly clogs storm drains and blocks runoff pathways. Keeping roads clear
enables water to drain faster and more completely, which prevents water from building
up on roadways due to storm-drain backups, and also minimizes erosion.
